Can a coach be both kind and discerning?

Absolutely. I believe the best learning environment is supportive and collaborative; a sharp eye and insightful feedback go hand in hand with deep respect; and the best teachers intuit and bring out what is best in each student.

I have been incredibly fortunate to work with Chris since 2019 when he was one of my teachers at The Barrow Group’s One Year Conservatory program. Since then, I have grown so much as an actor.

Recently, Chris helped me with an audition for a role on an upcoming HBOmax series. We did extensive script analysis, worked on many tools and different variations of the scene. One of Chris’ observations about the script ended up being the key to me getting pinned for the role and, later, booking the role!

I am forever grateful for Chris’ insight as a teacher and mentor. He is so easygoing to work with, which always makes it a pleasure. I look forward to working with Chris soon and booking more roles!

Where did you learn to teach?

I trained formally as a teacher with Seth Barrish. I believe Seth is an acting teacher of historic importance who has made original contributions to how acting is taught. Together with Lee Brock and a small group of actors, Seth formed The Barrow Group in 1986. The technique Seth and Lee have codified and refined was developed by actors and I believe this makes all the difference. There are so many methods out there and all kinds of advice. It can quickly become confusing and overwhelming. I have found that confusion and complexity tends to puts actors in their head. So it is critical to select, synthesize, and simplify our technique, so it is easy to use. The tools I learned from Seth are the foundation of my approach, which I have continued to develop and make my own over the last 20 years.

These tools are actor-tested and they work!

Chris is an actor and teacher with more than 40 years of experience. He has taught acting at NYU and is a senior faculty member at The Barrow Group (TBG), which Anne Hathaway calls “the institution that taught me how to act”. TBG has also trained Brett Gray (On My Block), Emmy Award Winner Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development), Alison Wright (The Americans), Lola Kirke (Mozart in the Jungle), Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield), Sarita Choudhury (Misisippi Masala, A Hologram for the King, The Path), Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of…, Game of Thrones), Obie Award Winner Martin Moran, and many others.

As an actor, Chris has played leading roles on Broadway, starred in world premieres by A.R. Gurney and David Ives, and played a season in British Rep. Some career highlights include Jim Farrell in the Broadway production of Titanic, numerous performances in the starring role of Bobby Childs in the Broadway production of Crazy for You, appearances on such episodic television series as Law and Order and Ed, and a featured role in the recent independent film Ask for Jane.

Who have you worked with?

I’ve had the pleasure of working with and learning from so many amazing artists, including Brett Gray, John Slattery, Sam Waterston, Jerry Orbach, Tom Cavanagh, Julie Bowen, Bob Krakauer, Mark Hamill, Mike Nichols, Len Cariou, William Fichtner, Susan Stroman, Mike Ockrent, David Costabile, Victoria Clarke, Michael Cerveris, Brian D’Arcy James, Michelle Pawk, Beth Leavel, Martin Moran, Danny Burstein, Casey Nicholaw, George Abbott, Seth Barrish, Lee Brock, and many others.

Simply put… I highly, highly recommend Chris Wells. He is easily one of the finest acting coaches in the world. His approach is simple and clear and his eye is superb. He’s just extraordinary!

I have worked with Chris during my one-year conservatory program at The Barrow Group. He was leading the program and so we worked with him the most during that year. Chris is generous, patient, and very attentive in his classes. And I find so many things I learned in his classes even helpful today after years working on my craft. He used to always share his genuine and honest opinions about how and where things are going through the studying process. Chris offers you a kind, safe and open environment to work on the craft and grow.

Working with Chris is always such a joy. He really helped me grow as a person and as an actor. He has a way of putting you at ease when you are beginning to work that really helps you experiment and take risks that you wouldn’t normally take. I think working with Chris has had the most positive impact on my acting of any training I have had thus far. Chris really gives his actors the tools and the confidence to identify problems in their own acting and fix those problems themselves. Though he guides you through those choices at first, he makes you rely on your own instincts as well. The more you are supported and guided by Chris’ words of wisdom, the more confidence you gain in your own ability.

I am blessed to have known Chris Wells for many years. When I am near Chris, I have always found that a deep part of me feels at home. That is, nurtured, safe, grounded and hopeful. As a friend, colleague and teacher he has a knack for helping me see and believe in what is best in myself. His dedication to his students and his clients is as boundless as his wisdom and kindness.

Martin Moran, Author and Actor

Chris has a great imagination! Though I study the sides thoroughly and come up with my own ideas of how they can be done, I’m always astonished by his ideas which are so interesting, bringing so much to the audition.

And because of who he is, coaching with him is always a pleasure!

Roger Rathburn, 22 appearances on Letterman

I have worked with Chris Wells for well over a decade both as fellow actors and teachers at The Barrow Group Theater and School. Chris has a firm grip, an acute sensitivity and keen perception of the craft that he can clearly communicate to his students. Chris has also walked the walk of a professional actor. If you want to make acting your career, have fun along the way, and gain an edge over the competition, Chris is the perfect choice to guide you there.

Chris has worked with me on scenes and also individually on audition material. His directing and coaching is spot on - insightful and transforming. He knows the actor’s purpose, the relationship to the script, and understands me, the individual, working through the self inflicting barriers that need to disappear. It is hard to imagine turning anywhere else for the support I need to prepare for a role.
